Getting started

You don't need a $5,000 setup to start a homestead

2026-06-02 · Rough Acre

Search 'how to start homesteading' and you'll be sold raised-bed kits, fancy tools, and courses before you've grown a single thing. Most of it you don't need yet.

Start with what you have

  • A few pots or a small bed and good soil beat an expensive kit.
  • Seeds and water cost almost nothing — start there.
  • A notebook to track what you plant and when is worth more than any gadget.

Self-reliance is a skill, not a shopping list. The people who last are the ones who started small, learned the rhythm of a season, and added tools only when a real need showed up.

Buy the tool when the task demands it — not because an ad told you a 'real' homesteader owns it.

That's why we sell guides and planners, not $300 gizmos. Learn the season, keep honest notes, grow a little more each year. The land rewards patience, not spending.
